The Body and Gender
授業内容
The purpose of this course is to give a deep theoretical and empirical overview of gender, the body, sexuality and society, mainly in contemporary Japan. We will consider the "body" and "gender" as historical and cultural categories and ask: "What is the body?" "What is gender?" "What is sexuality?" "How does ‘culture’ shape the body and gender? We will explore a variety of ethnographic and theoretical materials (including readings and films) on how gender, sexuality and the body has been culturally constructed and experienced in the socio-historical context of postwar Japan.
