Local Politics and Tourism

授業内容

This class will examine how local governments are engaging in border tourism for the purpose of economic revitalization. Border tourism usually involves visiting a borderland and then crossing the border to enter another country. In Japan, the leading practitioners of border tourism have organised various tours including those between Hokkaido and Sakhalin, and Tsushima and Busan. This class will examine the successes and difficulties of these tours and question the meaning of this kind of tourism.

略歴・主要業績

After doing my Undergraduate and Masters degrees in the UK at Oxford University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), I moved to Hokkaido University to complete my doctorate at the Graduate Faculty of Law. My research focuses on the history of migration after the collapse of the Japanese Empire. Between April 2017 and September 2018 I worked as an assistant professor at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center at Hokkaido University. The project I was involved with was about borders and, in particular, the role of border tourism as a means of stimulating local economies in Japan.
