授業内容

This course focuses on second language (L2) pragmatics. We learn how to investigate how language learners use their L2 in different social situations and how their pragmatic or interactional competencies can be developed. This course additionally focuses on pragmatics in computer-mediated communication, which has been underexplored in the field of second language pragmatics. Relevant topics include how L2 pragmatic learning takes place in a classroom, online learning environments, or “in the wild.” The primary aim of this course is to explore the learning, development, and acquisition of pragmatics rather than the teaching of it. After learning the theoretical background, research methodologies, and data collection procedures, we critically read research papers and discuss the articles with each other. Students will be expected to master the skills needed for conducting a review of relevant studies, finding a research gap to be filled, and conducting a small-scale research project or producing a position paper focusing on a particular area of second language pragmatics. Developing academic writing skills is another course aim.
