Hokkaido University bases its education on four philosophies: an emphasis on frontier spirit, cultivating global perspectives, allround education, and practical learning. In so doing, our graduate school's mission is to offer education rooted in the following four principles, so as to cultivate capable people who can contribute to solving real world problems.

  • To respond with flexibility to real issues of modern society without being bound by conventional research frameworks of social science fields related to: public relations, media, journalism, communications, and tourism.
  • To never forget the globalization, diversification, and crossborder nature of society, culture, and communication in the context of increasing mobility of people, goods, information, and capital.
  • To always be aware of interdisciplinary connections with adjacent fields, including the humanities and natural sciences, while building on the knowledge and skills necessary in each area of expertise.
  • To always move toward practical research that proves the theoretical and ideological frameworks built through research at the university, in light of facts and data obtained in social fieldwork.
