Contrastive Studies of Japanese and Other Languages

Class Content

To reconsider the Japanese language from various viewpoints based on the contrast between Japanese and other languages.

In this course, students will learn how to design and implement research in the fields of sociolinguistics and contrastive linguistics.
The goals of this course are to understand the universality and distinctiveness of Japanese as a foreign language, and to acquire the fundamental knowledge of contrastive linguistics and to understand various research method. The topics include sounds, phonemes, vocabulary, orthography, grammar, sentence types, discourse style and etc. Students discuss with a presentation on each topic, and read the relevant papers.
