Inbound Tourism To Japan

Class Content

How do you study "inbound tourism?”

"Inbound" is now one of the most frequent words in mass-media. The term “inbound tourism,” is often used to refer to topics such as the explosive purchase power of Asian tourists, high popularity of Japanese powder snow "Japow" in Australian tourists, the impacts of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, and the COVID19 pandemic, but these are only "market trends" and do not account for all the types of "inbound tourism."

In this lecture, we will reconsider "inbound" not as a phenomenon or trend in Japan as a specific destination, but as an issue related to the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism in today's globalized world, mainly from a policy studies and management perspective.

As we consider the essence of "inbound tourism" in the world, Japan, and communities throughout this lecture and discussion, you may be able to answer questions like, "does Japan need a casino," "why is Japanese ramen gaining global popularity," or even "how long will Japanese people continue to admire Hawaii?"
