Theory of Multiculturalism

Class Content

Multiculturalism, Migration, Repatriation, Deportation, Minority Rights, Education, identity and language of diasporas.

In this class, we will learn about the actual multicultural situation and management of multicultural coexistence by each state and in several historical periods.
We will examine, the historical process from the empire to the nation-state and from the nation-state to the multi-ethnic nation. You will also learn about borders and ethnic groups, as well as ethnic deportation and repatriation. The goals of this class are 1) to deepen understanding of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural societies, and 2) to acquire the ability to consider modern society through analysis of national multi-ethnic policies and their historical transitions. The 1st and 2nd classes will be given as a lecture, then students will do their presentations and we will discuss them in the class.

Brief Outline of History & Achievements

Svetlana Paichadze, PhD, Associate Professor in the Research Faculty of Media and Communication at Hokkaido University. Her main research themes are the education, identity and language issues of Russian speaking diaspora. She is co-editor of Voices from the shifting Russo-Japanese border: Karafuto/Sakhalin, Routledge, 2015 and Russia and the countries of the APR : migration processes and problems of intercultural communication : Asia in Russia,also coauthor of Saharin zanryū: nikkanro hyaku nen ni wataru kazoku no monogatari(Left Behind in Sakhalin: A Century of Stories from Japanese-Korean-Russian Families), Kōbunken, 2016.
