Class Content

Interaction of politics and economy

The course will explore political economy of East Asian including the cases of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The course consists of two parts. The first part analyzes similarities and differences in the developmental paths and the systems of political economy in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. It also reviews existing studies on East Asian political economy. The second part examines the recent development in the economic relations among those countries focusing on such areas as trade, finance, and regional integration.

Brief Outline of History & Achievements

Hironori Sasada received his PhD in political science from University of Washington. He is the author of The Evolution of the Japanese Developmental State System: Institutions Locked-in By Ideas (Routledge, 2012); “Resurgence of the ‘Japan Model?’: Japan’s Aid Policy Reform and Infrastructure Development Assistance” in Asian Survey, Vol. 59 (6), December 2020, pp.1044-69.
