Modern Japanese Studies
Introducing diverse interdisciplinary perspectives on the scholarly exploration of modern Japan, from history to sociology, from political science to cultural anthropology, from media studies to linguistics.
Brief Outline of History & Achievements
Ph.D in Anthropology, University of Chicago. BA in Linguistics and Anthropology, New York University. As a linguistic anthropologist, I am broadly interested in the meaning of communication and sociality: how ideas about language and communication shape everyday habits and political processes. I have also written extensively about popular media culture. Currently, I am building a new project examining metacommunicative struggles over how to define, control, and discipline (im)proper human contact. Along with these ongoing interests I hope to continue with my ethnographic work on "personal history" and related forms of grassroots literacy in modern Japan.
