Cultural, Social and Economic Sustainability in Heritage Tourism Development

This course focuses on understanding how the attribution and negotiation of the significance and value of cultural heritage in contemporary contexts is involved in the expression of identity, social empowerment and economic development. There has been a rise in the recognition of heritage as a resource for cultural, social, and economic development. Thus, cultural and natural heritage have come to be viewed as potential tourist sites as the tourism industry continues to see growth globally. Concurrently, various values, such as historical, ethical, religious, economic and political values, are projected onto heritage by its stakeholders. However, the gap between the interests of stakeholders can increase as the values tourists ascribe to heritage impacts perceptions of ethnic groups, regions, and even nations related to the heritage. This course will consider how to manage the diversity of values associated with heritage, and how to develop heritage tourism with the aim of cultural, social and economic sustainability.
