Class Content
Second language pragmatics
This course will focus on technology and language learning. Students will learn how
language learners learn, acquire, and change their use of second language(s) using a
variety of information and communication technologies in a variety of social contexts.
Topics include digital literacy, communicative competence, interaction, pragmatics,
writing, computer-mediated communication, and relevant research methods including
qualitative methods and post-qualitative inquiry. In class, students will critically read
and discuss books and research articles. Students are expected to understand the
structure of relevant research articles, summarize, and critique their content. The goal is
for students to be able to decide on their own topic, conduct a literature review,
summarize what is the consensus in the field and what is missing, and conduct a mini
research project or write a position paper without taking data.
