Those who wish to conduct research under guidance from a faculty member, audit a course for no credit, or study to earn credit before enrolling as a student, can apply to join as a research student, auditor, or credited auditor.

Research Student

Our research student system is designed for those who wish to conduct specialized research under faculty guidance without enrolling as a graduate school student. Many of the faculty members who teach classes here are part of the Research Faculty of Media and Communication, and the research students who study under them are under that division, rather than the Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies.
Students under the Research Faculty of Media and Communication are handled differently based on where they intend to enroll later. Please see below for more details.

Research Student (International Students)

  • This program is open to international students who hope to eventually enroll in Hokkaido University Graduate School of International Media, Communication, and Tourism Studies master's program or doctoral program.
  • For more information on the Research Student (International Students) program, please refer to the Overview.

Research Students (Japanese students)

  • This program is open to Japanese citizens who desire research guidance from a member of the Research Faculty of Media and Communication.

Research Students (Field of Multicultural Education)

  • This program is open to international students hoping for research guidance from faculty in the particular field of multicultural education within the Research Faculty of Media and Communication (advanced studies go through the Hokkaido University Graduate School of Education).

Note: Research student application guidelines (for both Japanese citizens and international students in the field of Multicultural Education) can be found on the Research Faculty of Media and Communication website.

Note: Our graduate school faculty also includes members of organizations other than the Research Faculty of Media and Communication (including the Center for Advanced Tourism Studies, etc.). Prospective students wishing to study under their guidance should contact the academic affairs office for details, as guidelines differ for each organization.

Auditor

Our graduate school's audit system allows students to audit classes for no credit if the graduate school deems it appropriate and there are no other obstacles.

Credited Auditor

Our graduate school's credited auditor system allows students to take courses and earn credits in those courses if the graduate school deems it appropriate and there are no other obstacles. The program differs from auditing in that if students pass the final examinations, they can earn credits for the class.
