Title: Motivating a duality of primary polar question meanings

Abstract:
Theories of polar question meaning often assume a single core meaning
and attempt to derive complex aspects of polar question meaning such
as bias, alternative generation and interactions with negation based on that single meaning. This research has yielded somewhat mixed and inconclusive results. Moreover, when we look beyond widely studied European languages, we see further nuances surfacing in relation to polar question form, making this one-meaning-fits-all approach even less convincing. I will argue on the basis of Turkish that there are not one but two primary polar question meanings, and discuss how from this perspective we can have a promising new approach to complexities such as evidential bias, polarity licensing, the Japanese particle -no, and
variation in paradigms of polar question forms in general.
